AFS Intercultural Programs Internship Gain Valuable International Non-profit Experience this Summer (2008) Overview AFS Intercultural Programs is a multi-national, non-governmental organization dedicated to peace through the promotion of worldwide intercultural learning and living experiences, primarily for high school students. AFS is seeking an undergraduate, graduate, or community college student to serve as an intern this summer. This internship position includes multiple tasks, focusing on administrative support for field coordinators, field managers, the participant support manager, and the regional director. The selected intern will work closely with our staff in volunteer development activities, web-based research, school relations initiatives, publicity and outreach, and administrative support of hosting and sending international exchange students. Benefits AFS will provide a stipend of $500 per quarter (for the summer). Interns can build their résumé with valuable hands-on work experience and staff training and mentoring at the world’s most experienced international student exchange organization. AFS will also work with the prospective intern to mold the position to suit her / his interests, learning objectives, and academic and career goals. This internship can be ideal for those studying international affairs, communication, education, foreign languages, sociology, anthropology, and related majors, or those interested in non-profit work, international education, and / or peace-building. AFS will support students interested in pursuing this internship for academic credit, and will work with a prospective intern to meet the entailed requirements. Responsibilities Working closely with our Portland-based staff, the intern will have the following responsibilities: Outreach and Field Trip Planning •Web-based research on prospective collaborating schools, demographics, and the potential for AFS exchanges in distinct areas in the Western United States •Contacting schools and making appointments for field staff visits/presentations •Assisting with follow up from staff field trips (thank you letters, documentation, database updates, etc.) •Assisting with outreach to AFS returnees, teachers, and other constituents to promote AFS exchange / study abroad programs and build our volunteer base. Volunteer Development •Working with field coordinators to develop and implement assessment, recruitment, and appreciation activities for volunteers in the Western Region •Web-based research for potential volunteers •Assist field coordinators with ensuring and tracking follow-up with volunteer leads. Conference Planning •Assist training staff with logistical planning/tracking for volunteer meetings and conferences, including the collection of registration forms, management of the attendee list, and developing the layout and scheduling of a conference •Possible assistance in conference delivery, including presentations, training, and logistics. Support of Field Coordinators •Support field coordinators by mailing AFS materials to volunteers and following up on other volunteer requests, as needed •Prepare and submit materials, such as PSAs or press releases, to local media •Conduct on-line/phone research for community-based organizations in coordination with field staff; make contact, determine action, and help implement collaboration plans. Other •Coordinate mailings for the region, as needed •Assist with volunteer registration or host family paperwork collection, as needed •Other duties to suit intern’s interests and strengths, or as assigned by manager Work Conditions The AFS Intern will work an average of 20 hours per week over the course of the summer with a team in the Regional Service Center in downtown Portland, OR. Office hours are 9:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday, however in work with volunteers, evening and weekend hours are occasionally requested.
